Wayfinding at VIU

Campus Development ran a survey from August 2 to September 30 asking students and employees to share their experiences and suggestions about wayfinding signage on the Nanaimo campus. Your thoughtful input will help us develop a comprehensive, accessible and inclusive wayfinding signage system. Thank you to everyone who participated and congratulations to our prize winners!

A brief summary of the key results

  • We got 470 responses and hence a lot of data to show how people use the campus!
  • Our top priority will be improving building number and name signs so they are larger, obvious, consistent and higher contrast.
  • We identified many key locations for signs and maps, including parking lots, the library, upper cafeteria, student residences, bus loop, etc.
  • Hard-to-find buildings include the library and Campus Store, B356, B345, the gym, B200, VIU High School, etc.
  • Marking building entrances with floor number is preferred.
  • Colour-coding the campus by elevation will help people navigate.
  • New signs and maps will be accessible for everyone and will be well-lit when it is dark.
  • Beautification to the signs and maps are desired while keeping the content concise.
  • Digital options for certain signs and maps will be explored.
