A new partnership between the Central Vancouver Island Job Opportunities Building Society (CVIJOBS) and Vancouver Island University (VIU) will ensure adult tutoring programs continue in the Oceanside region. During the past few weeks VIU has been exploring the potential for CVIJOBS to take the lead on the Adult Tutoring Program, as the University shifts its focus to support other regional initiatives including the Centre for Healthy Aging and the Mount Arrowsmith Biosphere Reserve.
CVIJOBS, through the operation of the Career Centre, has been helping people find employment in the Oceanside region for nearly 40 years. CVIJOBS has worked closely in the past with VIU to deliver the Tutoring Program, providing space for staff, tutors and learners as well as administrative and program assistance. Beginning April 1, 2015, CVIJOBS will provide enhanced support through program coordination and additional administrative support. VIU will continue to support tutor training.
Deb Tardiff, CVIJOBS Board Chair, is pleased with the continuation of the Tutoring Program. “As an organization committed to delivering career-related services for the benefit of job seekers and the community, we are proud to contribute to the ongoing success of this important program,” says Tardiff. “Our exceptional staff and facilities will be of huge benefit to the program.”
Following discussions with VIU, CVIJOBS Executive Director, Cheryl Dill, is pleased that the partnership with the University will continue. “CVIJOBS has enjoyed an excellent working relationship with VIU for many years. As CVIJOBS’ level of involvement increases, we will continue to ensure our commitment to program participants remains the top priority.”
VIU is also pleased that the program will continue as well as the partnership with CVIJOBS. “VIU is proud of its strong community partnerships in all the regions it serves,” said Dr. David Witty, VIU’s Provost and Vice-President Academic. “We are pleased we were able to work with CVIJOBS to find a solution that supports the continuation of the Tutoring Program in Oceanside. We also appreciate the hard work and dedication of the many volunteer tutors who make this program a success.”
VIU is strongly committed to the Oceanside region through its regional centre in Parksville, Milner Gardens and Woodland, and the Deep Bay Marine Field Station. VIU is also moving forward new initiatives such as the Centre for Healthy Aging and the Mount Arrowsmith Biosphere Reserve project. More details on these and other initiatives will be shared with the community later this spring.
