Message from the Acting President: Update to the Community April 24, 2025

Further to my emails on March 28, April 2 and April 10, I want to continue providing timely updates as we navigate this ever-shifting landscape together. I would first like to extend my sincere thanks to everyone who attended the recent in-person roundtable sessions. Your thoughtful questions, active engagement and continued commitment to VIU are seen and deeply appreciated.

A wide range of themes emerged from those discussions, and it’s clear that our fiscal challenges remain a central concern. Please know that I remain committed to open communication and keeping you informed as new developments unfold.

Deficit Mitigation Plan and Financial Audit

In May, I will provide a detailed update on actions tied to our Deficit Mitigation Plan, which demonstrates our commitment to meeting the Ministry-approved framework for financial stability.

I also want to update you on the Cash and Financial Framework Audit initiated by the Ministry. They have appointed PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP (PwC) to conduct this review, which began on April 10 and will conclude on May 22, 2025.

PwC’s audit will include:

  • An evaluation of VIU’s policies and controls related to financial systems and position management.
  • An assessment of VIU’s financial state and solvency.
  • A review of tuition and fees revenue forecasting, reporting, and budgeting practices.
  • An assessment of our ability to remain a financially sustainable Post-Secondary Institution (PSI).
  • Recommendations for long-term financial sustainability.

I welcome this review and view it as an important step forward. Working alongside the Ministry, we have an opportunity to strengthen our financial infrastructure and build a more resilient future for VIU.

Leadership Meeting Updates

Please note that SMT meetings for the remainder of April, May and June have been cancelled due to scheduling challenges. However, President’s Council meetings will continue, and SMT members will participate in those forums to ensure continuity in leadership discussions.

Travel Advisory – United States

Finally, I’d like to acknowledge recent concerns surrounding academic travel to the United States. In response to the Canadian Association of University Teachers’ (CAUT) advisory against non-essential travel, International SOS has prepared a guidance document for those who may need to travel or transit through the U.S.

I encourage everyone to review this material carefully when making travel plans and to take necessary precautions, especially for academic travel.

Thank you, as always, for everything you do for VIU. I’ll share another update soon with more details on what lies ahead. While we know our journey ahead presents real challenges, I believe deeply in our collective strength and resilience. Together, we are shaping the next best version of VIU.

With gratitude,

Emily Huner, CPA, CMA, MBA (she/her)
