Emily Huner has joined Vancouver Island University (VIU) as CFO and Vice-President, Administration.
In this key role, Huner leads a portfolio that includes Enterprise Risk Management, Facilities and Ancillary Services, Financial Services, Information Technology and Strategic Initiatives. She is responsible for providing leadership, strategic direction and overall management in support of achieving the designated goals and priorities in VIU’s Strategic Plan: People, Place, Potential, including leading the Operations Plan, one of the six foundation plans described in the Strategic Plan.
Huner is an adept strategist, an accomplished expert in change leadership and a technical authority in operations management who brings more than a decade of administrative leadership experience in finance, operations and people to the role. She most recently held the role of Assistant Vice-Provost, Student Affairs at Nova Scotia’s Dalhousie University. Huner also held several other roles at Dalhousie, including Director, Finance and Administration for the Faculty of Arts and Science (2018), Director, Operations for Student Health and Wellness (2016), Operations Manager, Student Health Services (2015), and Manager Finance and Administration for Athletics and Recreation (2013). Additionally, Huner held a term as Vice-President, Business & Finance at the University College of the Cayman Islands (2020).
Huner holds both a Master of Business Administration - CMA (2013) and a Bachelor of Commerce - Marketing (1995) from St. Mary’s University. She is a Chartered Professional Accountant and was the recipient of the Outstanding Achievement Award from the Dalhousie Professional & Managerial Group in 2019. Huner was Chair, Human Resources Integrated Team Committee, Dalhousie University, May 2019 to January 2020; Chair, Nominating Committee, Dalhousie Professional & Managerial Group, July 2017 to January 2020; and Co-Chair, Dalhousie University’s United Way Campaign, January 2021.
Off-campus, Huner is a passionate fitness and outdoor enthusiast who enjoys participating in power weightlifting, hiking, biking and kayaking.
Huner assumed her new role on May 23, 2023.
